Magnum ice cream product comparison

When was the last time you really thought about the portion size of your meals or snacks? Over the next few weeks I am going to be doing more of these comparisons to help bring awareness to serving sizes and energy (calories) in various options of similar products.

Today I've got a Magnum Mini (47g) and a Magnum Classic at (82g). Obviously the mini is smaller than the classic, but I could just about guarantee that you'd be well satisfied with just a mini.

Consider first that you probably aren't eating this as a meal and more than likely as a dessert. At which point you'd likely already be quite full or satiated having not long just eaten a main meal. At just 155 calories the mini isn't too hard on the caloric budget. The classic on the other hand is a fair bit higher weighing in at 262 calories.

When I consider comparisons like this, I think about the form in which the food is presented and packaged. It would be useless for me to compare these products per 100g because that's not the way it is consumed - we can't scoop it out of the tub, like we would for ice cream in a tub.

For example, in this case it would be quite unlikely you would eat a mini classic and then half or more of another one - because it is packaged into a single serve. Likewise, I don't think it would be likely that you'd simply only eat half of the larger Magnum classic. Because it's there in front of you in a single portion you would probably find yourself eating the whole lot without a second thought yeah?

So what am I getting at? Start to think about your portion sizes - you can still have your cake and eat it too, but being mindful of portions can be the key to sustainability. I myself have enjoyed a mini magnum on occasion. I don't believe any foods should be totally off limits (except soft drink), but rather the amount we have and how often we have them is the key. This is definitely an occasional food - so have it occasionally like once every few months.
